About the Artist and Kiln Formed Glass
Janet Wittenberg was introduced to the art of kiln formed or fused glass via a circuitous route. After receiving her BA in Fine Arts from
“When first working with glass, I was immediately captivated by its qualities of color and light, and intrigued by the range of techniques and possibility of further exploration.”
Janet continues to learn via workshops, conferences and experimentation. She produces nature inspired functional and sculptural art glass in her studio; “Glass Habitat”, as well as custom architectural work such as windows, counter tops, tiles, and mirrors. Her work is also sold at various craft shows and galleries in the DC area.
“Each of my fused glass pieces are individually designed. I begin by creating a drawing, or model. I then cut, grind, and assemble the various glass components to be incorporated into the design. I may also use techniques such as sandblasting, torch work, and airbrushing. I’ll then transfer the assembled design into the kiln, and fire the glass to 1500 degrees.” The piece may then be refired multiple times depending on the complexity, and the desired affect. The final firing usually involves using a mold to obtain the three dimensional shape. Other materials such as wood or metal may be incorporated in the completed work.
